I saw a car with the license plate “WISDUMB” today. Very seldom am I caught wondering if what I am seeing is brilliant or quite possibly the stupidest thing I have ever seen. This one put me in that mode and I have to say that after careful consideration I am going to have to side with the latter.
Also, can someone explain to me why it is impossible to get all of the episodes of the Monkees on DVD? The collection of the series (of which I think there were only two actual seasons) is out of print and I’d be forced to pay an insane amount on Amazon for them. Isn’t this show one of the best things that could ever possibly be on DVD? Who wouldn’t want to own every single episode of the Monkees? This bothers me greatly.
(By the way, apparently my dream of having the Monkees inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is being stopped by Jann Werner of Rolling Stone, who pretty much has the final say in the entire process. So if you ever needed a reason to hate Rolling Stone even more than you already do here you go. Seriously, is there anything more representative of Rock and Roll than the Monkees? Sure they didn’t play their own instruments but isn’t that the entire point? In Rock and Roll certain things like talent, skill or playing in tune aren’t technically required.)
Note to my KC brethren: I finally checked my official blog email (which is seldom read because, well, everyone who reads this knows me in real life except for possibly my fanbase in Brazil) and I have several emails from the Funkhouser reelection campaign. Some people might actually remember that a few years ago I was named an “influential blogger” by the Funkhouser campaign for my innovative campaign slogans like “Bring the Funk to KC” and “We need the Funk” and “Funk this town!” I am not making this up. I was invited to press events and everything which is rather hysterical given that much of the rest of the blog was devoted to describing KC as a cowtown with a distinct lack of cows.
Well, I was able to get Funk elected and then left town before I had to deal with the consequences. That doesn’t mean that I am off the press list though as I am receiving a surprising number of emails from the campaign inviting me to events around town, asking if I want a Funk bobblehead or a t-shirt reading, and I quote here, “Funk your mayor.” It is often said that people get the politicians they deserve. If there is one city more deserving of Funk than KC I have yet to see it.

Your plate is so vain
Ok, this whole personalized license plate thing has gone too far. Every time I see one that is cool enough to make me rethink my stance I see one that is so mind boggling out there that I can’t even see straight.
Things started off very well this morning when I saw the plate ABSNTHE. I am entirely behind any plate that advertises alcoholic beverages particularly those that have historically been illegal due to the minor side effect of causing insanity. (That said, my favorite bar in New Orleans is an absinthe bar that has always been serving the stuff. It’s New Orleans, laws don’t really apply down there as BP was fond of noting.) That gains high points in terms of a quality plate.
Things slowed down from there. In the afternoon I saw 2 JEKYLL and I must admit that I am still trying to figure that one out. I am guessing that it is a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde reference but I can’t figure out 1) why anyone would feel a great need to make that reference and 2) why you would need a two in front of it. I will also hold out hope that the driver was just a really big fan of the old Heckle and Jeckle cartoons. You know the ones that you would watch because there was absolutely nothing else on television.
But on my drive home I saw the one that topped everything. It said simply B OBAMA. I have to say I was completely dumbfounded by this. Now before you start going off on a political rant against what I have to say understand that everything I say would be exactly the same if I was behind a car with the plate GW BUSH. Which is, having your own name spelled out on your license plate is silly bordering on stupid. Having someone else’s name, particularly a politician’s name, on a plate is simply insane.
I mean I’m all for supporting a candidate but does that mean that you have to go down to the DMV to stake your claim on a plate? Does having that plate automatically make you more patriotic? What if Obama becomes the modern day equivalent of Rutherford B. Hayes? Do you still keep the plate as a mark of pride years down the line or do you change it? I mean, this is a vanity plate. That means that you have to pay extra for it. Give it to the campaign and slap a bumper sticker on your car. It would be much more sensible.
Imagine if you put your favorite athlete’s name on your car. If you had JETER or JORDAN or PEYTON people would pretty much assume that you are a douche. You wouldn’t just be a fan; you’d be one of those guys that calls into radio sport shows way too often. This is the political equivalent and to be honest I think that makes it worse.
Wednesday Night Music Club: It will be thirteen years this weekend since Jeff Buckley died. I have always said that the world would be a much better place musically if he was still with us. Of all the members of Gen X that we lost too soon his was the one that impacted me the most.

Get your Free Lindsay t-shirts now
Monday Weigh In: I came in at 208 this week which is down a pound from last week. I’ve got the needle moving in the right direction and that is the most important thing. I’m cleaning up my diet (except for the box of Chips Ahoy that somehow managed to sneak its way into my apartment) and am back to a workout routine that is almost but not quite routine. But progress is progress and per Wii Fit I now have a BMI of under 28. Now I just have to get it to 25 so I am no longer officially classified as chubby.
I’m not making this up but after last night’s post about vanity plates I found myself behind a car with a plate that read “FIBONCI” this morning. Now, that one is cool. I mean, it’s as easy as 1, 1, 2, 3, 5…
(This was one of the highlights of my day. I’m not sure if that is indicative of just how much of a nerd I am or how bad my day was. Probably a mixture of the two.)
In other news from this weekend they crowned Miss USA and….really does anyone care about this? Anyone at all? Ooh, look there are photos of Miss USA pole dancing and wearing, well, more clothes than she did in the Miss USA pageant. Are we supposed to be shocked by this? Does anyone even know what network this was broadcast on? Beauty pageants are a strange thing to begin with (and yes, they are supposed to be about talent and poise and how well you look in a swimsuit) and the Miss USA pageant has that Donald Trump layer of ooze to it but I just don’t seem to get the point. It’s 2010, does any of this even matter? And don’t get me started on Toddlers and Tiaras on TLC.
Really I’m just kind of played out with pop culture at the moment. My Beloved Lindsay is most likely headed to jail for not attending AA classes. Incredibly, all she had to do was show up. She could keep drinking but just had to attend class. There isn’t any movie coming out this summer that catches my interest other than seeing just how much The A-Team ruins my childhood memories. The TV season is winding down and summer looks to be another wasteland until the new season of Big Brother starts up. I guess I’m just going to have to spend time reading. What a concept.

Seriously, people
It used to be that I would simply get annoyed by vanity license plates. Now people seem to be taking it to the next level and incorporating their license plate holders into the vanity plates themselves. Over the past week I’ve seen the following:
1) A car with an “I support NPR” license plate holder with the license plate holder with the plate “SNOOTY”.
2) A bright yellow sports car with the plate “YELLOH”. At first I thought that this was simply a reference to the color of the car and that this guy was the second owner of a bright yellow sports car that decided that it was wasn’t enough to have a car that is completely unlike any color known in nature and that he had to specify for everyone what color the car actually is. Then I saw the license plate holder, which from top to bottom read as follows: “I will make you YELLOH in bed.” To which my reaction is a) it now makes much more sense why he didn’t use YELLOW and b) that might be the most idiotic thing that I have seen in my entire life. I mean, it made me embarrassed to be a carbon based lifeform. Plants are embarrassed when they see it.
So I’ve said it before and I will say it again; be cautious with the use of vanity plates. Just take the random number that the DMV gives you.
Not much happened to me or the world this weekend (unless you count thousands upon thousands of gallons of oil continuing to spill into the gulf, which apparently no one seems to care about.) In an attempt to change my current status of “fat slob” to “slightly overweight not very neat person” I did knock out four miles on the treadmill on Saturday. This was my first time on the treadmill in a long time and I felt pretty good during the workout. This morning was a different matter as various body parts were screaming at me. I apparently have muscles in places that I didn’t know muscles existed. So I’m a bit of a sore cowpoke in that regard.
I also finally moved my summer clothes to my main closet and put my sweaters away. I know most people have done that already but the Chicagoan in me does not believe that sweaters will not be necessary in mid-May. In fact, I always do keep one or two handy in July just in case. Yes, I always have a voice in the back of my head that says “Put on a sweater or you’ll catch a chill.” Mainly I realized that I have way too much clothes and need to do another round of donations. Especially shirts that are over ten years old. I think some might date back to college. It is rather frightening to think about given that I spent much of the afternoon watching the Hoarders marathon on TLC. Nothing will make you want to clean out your closets more than watching that show. Hell, you’ll walk into random houses just to clean out their stuff after watching the show.
Best of 120 Minutes: I’m in a Bettie Serveert mood at the moment. Things that you may not know: 1) The band name is Dutch for Bettie Serves, 2) music like this used to be if not popular at least prevalent, and 3) I saw them once in KC where there were maybe 30 of us there because it snowed half an inch that night.
The five random CDs for the week:
1) Pieta Brown “In the Cool”
2) David Ford “Songs for the Road”
3) Terrance Simien “Positively Beadhead”
4) Sting “The Dream of the Blue Turtles”
5) Sufjan Stevens “The Avalanche”
1) A car with an “I support NPR” license plate holder with the license plate holder with the plate “SNOOTY”.

Vanity thy plate is...
Just a lot of random points today…
1) While driving around town I have seen a car with the following license plate a lot: “DANJRES”. Said car happens to be a mini-van with references to a number of local junior high and high schools attached via bumper stickers, one of which may be extolling the virtues of an honor student. I believe this wins the award for “most ironic vanity plate ever.”
2) Here is the best celebrity arrest story that I have ever heard. Rip Torn was arrested on attempted bank robbery when he was found in a closed bank building highly intoxicated and carrying a loaded revolver. There are three different levels of awesome to this story. 1) Screw the typical celebrity arrest of drunk driving or being charged with performing lewd acts in a public restroom. Rip Torn was charged with trying to rob a freaking bank. 2) Not only does he get completely wasted he makes sure to carry his gun with him during the process. And 3) his explanation? “I was extremely drunk and mistook the bank for my house.” This just raises the question of how freaking awesome is Rip Torn’s house that he confused it with a bank? I mean, I don’t think that I could get drunk enough to make that mistake.
3) Hey the Grammies happened last night! Yeah, I didn’t watch either. Apparently Lady Gaga wore a wacky outfit and Pink acted as a human sprinkler. Oh, and the blonde haired country singer won some awards. No, not the American Idol one. The other one.
4) Burger King is reporting earnings tomorrow and there is concern that they are going to report another reduction in same store sales. What most people believe is the cause is that there advertising campaign with the King is attractive to young males but freaks the hell out of everyone else. To be honest, I can say the same thing about the menu. Burger King embraced the large, super sized, completely unhealthy menu items and readily promoted it as a good thing. I don’t think the world needs a triple Whopper. Outside of when I am at an airport and have no other option I can’t recall the last time I ate at Burger King.
5) Hey the Pro Bowl was last night too! Yeah, I didn’t watch that either.

Some notes prior to the unofficial holiday tomorrow. See, I remember when the day after Thanksgiving was not an official holiday from a company perspective. You would actually have to take a vacation day to get a four day weekend. Now not only is the four day weekend a mandate (because otherwise our economy would collapse (or collapse even further) but it is assumed that no one will perform actual work on Wednesday. So much for a productive society.
From the “More Things Change the More They Stay the Same” file I came across the following two personalized license plates while driving on Sunday and they both filled me with a sense of anger and annoyance. Here they are…
IMLOVED: So whoop dee doo. You are loved. And you are apparently so confident of that fact that you feel the need to prove it via a license plate. All you are doing is arrogantly stating how happy you are. You know what? Screw you! The rest of us on the highway are bitter, emotionless shells of human beings who perform an endless array of farcical tasks on the infinitesimal hope that one day things will be slightly less sucky than they are right now. The last thing I want to see while driving is a reminder of how pathetic my life is. I think running that car off the road would be fully justified.
(Yeah, it hasn’t been the best few weeks in the relationship department for good old EC)
NO9TO5: I’m sorry but what could anyone have against Dolly Parton. Sure I can fully understand a dislike of Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin is a bit of an acquired taste but how could anyone make a public stand against a film that features Dolly Parton in all of her glory. Plus, it features the comical stylings of Dabney Coleman best known for roles in such films as…ok, he was in like three thousand films but none of them are coming to mind right now. But still, it is Dabney F’n Coleman. I see no reason to be protesting this film.
Switching gears, apparently Batman is going to follow in the footsteps of Superman, Captain America, numerous Flashes, and Uncle Ben and be killed off in the comic books. Sure, it will vaguely make sense. Batman is just a guy and you would think at some point someone would have come up with the bright idea of, I don’t know, shooting the guy but I’m not too sure I like this idea of bringing realism into comic books. Bruce Wayne has been Batman for seventy years and you know why that is the case? Because we really like having Bruce Wayne as Batman. We don’t want Dick Grayson or Tim Drake or whoever else they find on the scrapheap to replace him. We want the brooding old man. And let’s face it, we’re just going to find a way to resurrect him in a year anyway.
Also, I am so pissed that protestors have shut down the Bangkok airport. My flight connects through there. Sure, it takes me three days to get home but I got a really cheap fare.
Finally, a reason to read the blog over the holidays. On Thursday night I plan to provide my Holiday Season Television Guide. Don’t trust what you might find in some strange, archaic piece of communication colloquially referred to as a “newspaper”. Only at Battling the Current will you find out what to watch, where to watch it, and how much nog is required for you to adequately accept the fact that Larry the Cable Guy has a Christmas special. Should be great.

This week on Bumper Stumpers...
If there is one thing that I am going to miss about not having a commute (other than getting to discover how many ways Kansas City can avoid filling in potholes) it is going to be not seeing so many wonderful vanity plates. Here are the two best from this week.
GUNGIRL: Remind me to never, under any possible circumstances, cut off a car with this license plate. I doubt that I would live to see the next traffic light. This is roughly the automotive equivalent of carrying a sign that reads “Will kick your ass for food.”
(By the way, there is a guy who stands on a corner I drive by who holds a sign that reads “Need money for tobacco and alcohol research.” I give him points for honesty.)
BJ-LOU: This is a rather unfortunate plate. After seeing the person in the car I’m pretty sure that this car is owned by a rather nice couple who refer to each other as B.J. and Lou. I bet they are incredibly sweet towards one another and are happier than I have ever been in my entire life. Still, that doesn’t stop the kid in me from seeing that plate on a Monday morning and start laughing hysterically because, look, it’s BJ LOU.
Yeah, I’m still a guy who at one point felt that convincing a girl to come back to my apartment after the bars closed to watch old Beavis and Butthead episodes was a good idea. That’s not even some bizarre euphemism; my plan was for us to watch some old episodes I had on DVD. At the time this seemed like a perfectly logical way to win over her heart. This is what happens when people order me shots of tequila. Which reminds me…I need to watch those DVDs on Monday.
Random Facebook Note: I know that I’m not the only person who receives random Facebook advertising links. It is an interesting way to discover what marketers think of you. Recently I had been receiving a lot of “Hot single women in your area want to meet you” ads. Apparently they have factored in that I hadn’t clicked on those because over the weekend I started to get hair loss ads. I’m not making this up. Even Facebook assumes that my lack of confidence with women is somehow tied to my current hairstyle. For the record I have a fine mass of luxurious hair that is going gray in a very dignified manner. So please Facebook overlords, can I avoid having to see some bald guy’s head every time I log on?
Oh, and before I click on the other ads I want more definitive proof that they are actually a) hot, b) single, c) women, d) in my area and e) want to meet me. I’ll take four of the five, (ok, three to be honest) but C is going to have to be in the equation somewhere.
One last random, somewhat geeky note. I’m really upset that they are basically going to kill the Mars Rovers due to budget cuts. They’ll continue to fund the space station, which no one wants and serves no purpose, but they are going to turn off the greatest machines ever built. Think about this. Spirit and Opportunity have been rolling around Mars for four years now with no way for on the spot repairs. The hope was that they would survive three months and that was if they survived the landing in one piece. I really consider the rovers to be one of the greatest feats of engineering ever. Why we will kill a program that is actually working is beyond me. There might be a few other areas of government that could use a few less million in funding.
